Holding on to hope

Acrylics on canvas - 90x90 cm (2022)

I wish I could do more, I wish I could make the pain go away. I wish I could make this world a safe and peaceful place. But I can't. I can only do it my way. By spreading a message of hope and light. By standing against hate, polarisation, racism, war and violence of any kind, by anyone.

In this work I have processed many thoughts, feelings and emotions. To me it was a way of getting them out of my system, out there in the world. A desire to speak, feel and tell.

This painting is not meant to be pretty, or aesthetic. On the contrary, you may even call it ugly. Because in fact, it is. Showing us the ugly truth. An explosion of too many things to handle. You don't know where to start looking first.

In a place where everything seems to go up in flames, the open hands, in the bottom left corner of the painting, are a symbol of hope. A lotus flower blossoming, a symbol of purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration and rebirth.

Many eyes, all over the world are looking down on the spectacle, like a sickening show, on broadcast - live - tv. While in the meantime, people are suffering, losing their lives, homes and loved ones. As portrayed on the bottom right, where a house is going up in flames.

Read about it, talk about it, speak up - is what the books and coffee cups are saying. And hold on to hope and kindness, even though it feels like faith is slipping through your fingers, is what the hand in the middle of the painting is telling us to do.
