 This time I decided to work without setting up a decent pencil sketch first. It was liberating to work like this.

 

I learned so much about what defines a good portrait for me. It's actually quite challenging to paint yourself because you don't see yourself the way other people do. Your reference photo is already an interpretation through someone's lens and a capture of a certain moment, in 2D. I guess to make a truly succesful portrait you have to put in soul, character. Even if that means letting go of the reference.
